How to Serve God & Not Be Led Away

When most people think of serving God, they think of things they can do on God’s behalf, like volunteering, donating, helping others but many forget the best service we can do for God is what we do with our lives. It is great to help others and God has nothing against that, but are you so focus on helping others you forget to serve God yourself? One of the most often quoted scripture often used to discuss not loving money is Matthew 6:24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” Clearly, we see God wants all of our attention and we are only to serve him. How can we serve God? We have to serve him with all our being, spiritually, physically, mentally, and financially. Our focus must be on him at all times. The entire world is distracted and many are being led away from God, and some are believers and don’t even realize they are being led away. If you are someone who is seeking God and don’t want to be led away in the wrong direction, here are some practical ways to not fall into the devil’s snare.

Practical Ways to Not Be Led Away

Stop Being Extra-You don’t need to re-create what the world does to include God, that’s not biblical. We often see this for holidays. For example, you have the church creating “Hallelujah Night” to substitute for Halloween. Nowhere in the scriptures had God instructed believers to create substitutions for anything this world does nowhere. That is a fabricated concept and it does not benefit you nor does this serve God in any way, Colossians 2:8. God does not need to be added to anything. He is the great I AM, the Alpha, and the Omega. He cannot be an addition. He made us, not we ourselves.

Stop Celebrating man-made Holidays while you, your pastor, and the church ignore God’s real celebration like Passover, several feasts that are scriptural. Learn the correct biblical celebrations that we as believers are to take part in, so you won’t continue to be led away by these fake holidays, Exodus, Leviticus 23, Jeremiah 10:1-5., Mark 14:12-16.

Serve God Mentally– stop engaging in things and with people that draw you away from God. For example, certain music, TV shows, movies constantly are promoting sin, lust, idolatry. Stop being around people who are constantly in negativity, gossiping, backbiting, nosey, trouble-makers, materialistic. These things and people bad habits will eventually rub on you, 1 Corinthians 15:33-34, “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.” Be mindful of what you are looking at, reading, and listening to, Matthew 6:22.

Serve God Spiritually– Continue reading your bible, spending quality time with God, be doers of the word, not just a hearer, pray, fast, seek God daily, James 4:8, 2 Timothy 3:16-17. The Bible truly has all the advice you need, take time and read it for yourself, stop relying on others to tell you what is in the bible.

Serve God Financially– God said when we help the poor we are lending to him, Proverbs 19:17. I watch many churches ask for donations to help make a church pretty and bigger and many raise millions to do so. I always wonder why these millions don’t go towards helping the poor instead. I’ve learned to direct my donations and offerings directly to those in need. It will be more practical to help those in need directly in any way you can, and at least you know exactly where the money went.

Serve God Physically1 Corinthians 6:19-20 tells is “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were brought we a price. So glorify God in your body” As much as the world teaches us “Our body is our own and we can do what we want” No, not for believers, your body is not your own. Therefore, you do have to take care of it. You have to be mindful of what you are eating and putting in your body. You can’t be sleeping with anybody and everybody, just because the world tells you to “live your life.” Scriptural God reserves sex for married people, anything outside of that is a sin, Hebrews 13:4. Furthermore, your body is a temple, if you are a believer and the Holy Spirit lives in you, drugs, excessive drinking, smoking, don’t belong in your body, Romans 12:1. I know many people struggle with these areas; some don’t, and won’t let these things go, just remember whom you are really serving when you do these things that are contrary to God’s word, Hebrews 10:26, “For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins.”

Exercise Wisdom & Discernment– Many are so quick to support certain organizations, groups, celebrities, politicians, churches and never think twice about who and what they are really supporting. I always found when I look closely into these entities or people they are often run by someone who is not a true believer or not a believer at all. What has helped me for years in not supporting certain things and people, is to look at who is in charge, what are they “really” getting out of it, who and what they are promoting, and who are they link to and support them as well. Many times just by observing the people who are promoting and supporting these organizations you can clearly see this has nothing to do with God and as believers we need to learn our place because many times you end up supporting and promoting something sinister and evil and opposes God. Hebrews 5:14 (ESV) “But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.”

Hopefully, this advice helps you see what direction you need to take to not be led away with the masses and help you focus on God. Always put this in the back of your mind, there is a separation of the sheep and the goats, and you don’t want to be on the wrong side. John 10:27-28 “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.”

May you build a strong spiritual foundation of love, wisdom, discernment, understanding, and knowledge. Focus on God & Draw Closer to God.“ And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of the Messiah, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Yahshua, to the glory and praise of God.” Philippians 1:9-11
