“There was no food, however, in the whole region because the famine was severe; both Egypt and Canaan wasted away because of the famine. Joseph collected all the money that was to be found in Egypt and Canaan in payment for the grain they were buying, and he brought it to Pharaoh’s palace. When the money of the people of Egypt and Canaan was gone, all Egypt came to Joseph and said, “Give us food. Why should we die before your eyes? Our money is all gone.” “Then bring your livestock,” said Joseph. “I will sell you food in exchange for your livestock, since your money is gone.” So they brought their livestock to Joseph, and he gave them food in exchange for their horses, their sheep and goats, their cattle and donkeys. And he brought them through that year with food in exchange for all their livestock. When that year was over, they came to him the following year and said, “We cannot hide from our lord the fact that since our money is gone and our livestock belongs to you, there is nothing left for our lord except our bodies and our land. Why should we perish before your eyes—we and our land as well? Buy us and our land in exchange for food, and we with our land will be in bondage to Pharaoh. Give us seed so that we may live and not die, and that the land may not become desolate.” So Joseph bought all the land in Egypt for Pharaoh. The Egyptians, one and all, sold their fields, because the famine was too severe for them. The land became Pharaoh’s, and Joseph reduced the people to servitude, from one end of Egypt to the other. However, he did not buy the land of the priests, because they received a regular allotment from Pharaoh and had food enough from the allotment Pharaoh gave them. That is why they did not sell their land. Joseph said to the people, “Now that I have bought you and your land today for Pharaoh, here is seed for you so you can plant the ground. But when the crop comes in, give a fifth of it to Pharaoh. The other four-fifths you may keep as seed for the fields and as food for yourselves and your households and your children, ”Genesis 47:13-24.
The story of the Seven Year Famine actually started when God gave Joseph the wisdom to interpret Pharaoh’s Dreams in Genesis 41. In any case, we can learn several things here even in these “modern” days. Many people are so used to life not really changing drastically that they sometimes feel things will always be the same, things will always be available for them. However, we are living in different times whether it’s man-made, God-inspired, things are happening. Now, you cannot prepare for every single thing in life, many things that are going to occur we will have no idea until it actually gets here. The best thing you can do is learn from every experience and prepare what you can with what you have.
What we can Learn from Egypt’s Famine
Crisis/ Disasters/Famines are going to occur that is just a part of the life cycle. If you know you live in certain areas that are prone to weather-related events, floods, disasters you prepare accordingly. If you don’t live in these areas you still prepare because it just may take place on a different scale in your area, Genesis 47:13.
The World/Country/State/Government can run out of stuff. Here, there was no food because of the Famine. If Pharaoh did not listen to Joseph’s dream and stock up for seven years, there would literally have been nothing for anyone to eat or use, Genesis 47:13-14. You should try to at least have the basics that can last you for the least six months. Just like you run out of supplies, the government can run out of supplies, so you can’t rely on anyone but what “you” stored/stock up on.
You may run out of money and have to ask for help. It was obvious that people were using their money to buy something, but eventually, it was all gone, and had to ask for help, Genesis 47:15. Be prepared for that to happen. Some people feel because they are rich they will always have, but will you have access to it? The world is moving into digital currency, when the grid goes down, how are you going to make withdrawals? If you are even allowed to.
Nothing will be Given to You for FREE & You may have to Exchange or Sell Something. Once there was no money or “access” to money, and they had to ask for help Joseph did not give supplies for free, Genesis 47:16-20. The people had to exchange or sell what they got to get what they need. They had to sell land, exchange cattle, etc. If that time comes, would you have anything worthy to exchange or sell? That is something to think about when preparing for different events in this world. Most importantly just because you know someone has something that doesn’t mean when severe times come they will be giving it to you for free.
You Still Have to Take Care of Your Business and Set Your Own House In Order. Joseph didn’t keep selling them supplies so they can keep coming back, he also gave them seeds to plant to harvest their own food. Genesis 47:23-24. Just because you have access to something doesn’t mean you can’t create your own. Start your own garden, learn canning and food preservation, so you don’t have to rely so much on supermarkets, especially when bad events occur and they are closed.
I hope last year and this year have taught you to be more observant, independent, and on your toes with preparing. I understand it may seem crazy to prepare for food shortages and the grid going down in a land where we really don’t go through these things like other countries, but it can happen here and it will happen here. So be prepared and stay prepare. We have four basics needs in life: Food, Water, Air, and Shelter make sure you examine your life and environment to see do you have enough if something should happen and how will you obtain it if you don’t have access to them the traditional way or I should say the “modern” way.
