I know many people don’t pray because they don’t know how to pray, some may not understand the importance of praying, or many more are just tired of their prayers not being answered. However, there are dangers in not having a prayer life. I want to encourage you not to give up on praying if you are at that point. Prayer is vital to your spiritual growth and life. You can stunt your spiritual life when you don’t pray. Prayer is also an important time to spend with God. God wants us to pray and when you study your bible, you will find numerous people praying to God, and numerous scriptures referencing us to pray. Ephesians 6:18 says “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; ” I underlined the key words here “Praying always.” We must commit or learn to commit our lives to daily prayer. We must not wait for something dramatic happen to pray. If we submit to God and pray daily we can intercede on behalf of others or even yourself before something bad happens and the Holy Spirit will help you with that, Romans 8:26.
When we don’t have a daily prayer life, we are more stress out, more anxious, fearful and more worried about the future; prayer is your time to let go, and let God, Philippians 4:6-7. God is not in the business of stressing you out nor is he in the worry business but when we don’t pray we experience these mental, emotional, and sometimes physical changes. We cannot do everything on our own and prayer will help you release that responsibility to God, Psalm 91; Isaiah 41:10; John 14:27; 1 Peter 5:7; Matthew 11:2-30. Prayer is that time to close the door and submit to God. When you do so, the peace of God that surpasses understanding will be with you, Philippians 4:6-7 (MSG). I know in my personal experience when I pray, I feel at peace and I am strengthened by God, 1 Chronicles 16:11; Isaiah 40:29. I have meant no one who didn’t want peace in their lives. Prayer will give you peace. Think about times in your life when you didn’t pray, and you were overwhelmed. You kept going without realizing you are slowly losing your peace. We can put down the cares of this world when we have a prayer life.
Last, when we don’t have a prayer life we are making ourselves targets for Satan to attack us spiritually, mentally and physically. The devil is looking for whom he may devour, 1 Peter 5:8. Satan is looking for easy targets. He is looking for people who are in sin, people who are disobeying God, people who want their own ways and people who are not praying, because Satan knows when you pray you are communicating with God and God is communicating to you. Satan knows God will give you insight and wisdom about Satan devices when you pray, Ephesians 6:10-18. Life already has its challenges, why make it more challenging by being a target? It’s time to pray.
The world is changing and it’s changing fast and it will get worse before it gets better. We must pray so we can stay under God’s protection. God will give you answers on how to handle what is to come. When you pray, God’s wisdom will be available to you. We must not take our prayer life lightly, or use it as an emergency hotline, we must pray daily. Start your day in prayer and end your day in prayer. Prayer is not reserve for unexpected problems, for grace at dinner, or when you feel like it, but we can pray daily, multiple times, about anything, God ears is ready to hear us. I encourage you to cry out to God, pray to him daily, let go of thinking you know all the answers or you can figure it out. Stop putting more work on yourself when God is able and ready to help you. If you desire to draw closer to God having a prayer life is important to do so; that is one area we have to take seriously in our lives if we want to grow spiritually. I love Daniel’s prayer in the 9th chapter 2-23, He set his face to God, giving God the attention in his prayer “In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem. And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes: And I prayed unto the Lord my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments; We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments….” I encourage you to read the rest of the verses in the bible.
I hope you see the importance of praying and the dangers of not having a prayer life. What’s more important is that God wants us to pray. I truly believe prayer will make a difference in your life but it’s up to you to pray.
“The key to prayer is simply praying.” ~A. W. Tozer
