Preparing Yourself to Hear from GOD

Many of us are waiting on a word or direction from God, but do realize you must be prepared to hear him? When God speaks, sometimes it’s in a very small still voice and if you are too busy or too worried, you won’t be able to hear him. We have become very “busy” people, social media has made many people feel they are “busy,” but have you looked at your life and look at what you are busy doing? You’ll find a good percentage of your time, you’re not doing anything productive for your life or doing anything that is actually spiritually growing you and drawing you closer to God. To hear from God, you can’t be too “busy,” its true life must still go on, but it’s wise to take a time out in your day and be still, quiet, to hear from God. If you are running here, doing that, and taking care of this, you’ll miss that small still voice of God then wonder if God ever spoke to you.

Another thing that keeps us from hearing from God is worry and fear. We tend to be worried about how things are going to work out and it consumes our thoughts and day trying to figure it out. When your mind is full of worry and fear the voice of God will be lost. Your faith in God should be louder than your fears. Worrying about how things are going to work out doesn’t change the situation, you have to stop the worrying and trust God will work it out, Galatians 3:2; 2 Timothy 1:7

Of course, having a relationship with God will make hearing from God a lot easier! Taking the time to grow spiritually and draw closer to God can only be a benefit. Having weekly fellowship by going to church one day of the week is not enough and does not constitute a relationship with God.  A relationship involves daily contact. God desires to be in our lives every day. Examine your life-where does God fit in? Is God presence more than your worries and fear? Do you have a relationship with God? If not, it’s time to get serious about your relationship with him, John 10:27; John 8:47; Romans 8:14; 1 Peter 3:12; Deuteronomy 4:12

Practical Ways to Prepare to Hear from God

Prayer– praying is communicating to God, and it’s a perfect time to be still after praying to hear from him. God may not bring something physically to your presence as an answer; he may just give you an idea, a direction or guide you. That is why it’s important to take time to pray so you can hear from him, Psalm 46:10

Meditation– There are many forms of meditation, some do it quietly, some like it with calming music, candles, some focus on scriptures or encouraging words. Whichever you choose, taking time to meditate really does help with hearing from God because it helps to clear your mind, step outside of yourself, your worries, your fear, and focus on God. I recall a time I was very worried about how something I was praying about and how it is going to get accomplish and God directed me to just sit still and meditate and I starting doing breathing exercise and speaking the word of God over my life, by the time I was done, I was completely free of my worry and God literally instructed me to a chapter in the bible where I got my answer, Psalm 119:105Proverbs 3:5-6Proverbs 20:27

Letting Go– Examine your heart, are there things you haven’t let go of? Still holding on to anger, resentment, un-forgiveness, the past? You have to learn to let things go. I see it this way, what’s done is done. You can’t change the past, so there is no reason to dwell on it. You have to move forward and you do so when you focus on God. Stop allowing bad feelings to block your vision, eardrums, and heart from hearing God, James 1:19-27; Ephesians 1:18

Scriptures Meditation

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me,” ~ John 10:27

“The eyes of Elohim are toward the righteous and his ears towards their cry,” ~Psalms 34:15

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding, which must be curbed with bit and bridle, or it will not stay near you,” ~Psalm 32:8-9

“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart, “~Hebrews 4:12

“And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left,” ~Isaiah 30:21

I hope you have been encouraged in preparing yourself to hear from God. God wants to be near to you as much as you want to be near to him. Take time and take steps to draw closer to God. In my book, Taking Steps to Draw Closer to God, I provide my own journey and practical steps to do so.
