The Dangers of Living in Fear

In continuation of May Mental Health Month, I want to encourage you to not live a life of fear. God does not want us to live in fear because he knows nothing good comes out of fear. Most people who live in fear often make poor decisions, irrational, become stagnant in life, and mentally troubled. You will have no peace in life if you choose to be in fear of everything. We are already warned about multiple events to occur in this life from the bible. The world is going through a shifting, a judgment, but God is still in charge and greater than these things and he will look out for those who choose to stay on his side. The events of 2020 and parts of 2021 have many in constant fear of shortages, inflation, an economic collapse, war, and not living life to their fullest. The quickest way to lose your peace is to worry about things you can’t control. These things are going to happen, you prepare what you can but unfortunately, you won’t be able to prepare for every single thing that happens in life. That is why it’s important to have a solid relationship with God, full faith and trust in him, and that he will protect you no matter what. You don’t want to live in fear, it’s not healthy and does you no good. Some people are preparing for doomsday, but what if doomsday doesn’t appear until five years from now, or ten years, or twenty years, or fifty years from now, are you going to live in fear all these years? Do you think that is what God has placed you on earth for, to worry about everything or worry about things that may happen? Is that living your best life? “ For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind,” 2 Timothy 1:7Life is very precious and we should not waste it living in fear. Some people don’t even plan anything anymore, because they believe this is “the end.” God wants you to enjoy life, have peace, have joy, and be prosperous in every area of your life but when you continue to live in fear you won’t experience any of that. “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Messiah,” Philippians 4:6-7.

Five Keys to Stop Living in Fear

Stop Feeding Your Fears: If it’s the news feeding your fears, stop watching it, take a break. If it’s other people talking about things that are making you fear, stop listening or take a break. It’s important to know what is happening around you, but if you can’t handle it and it drives you to fear, then you need to step away. To have a healthy, positive mind you have to focus on healthy, positive messages. “ Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you, “ Philippians 4:8-9.

Take Positive Actions: What is it that you want in life? Write down what you want and the actions you have to take to accomplish them then do it. When you get focus on improving your life in any way you choose, financially, spiritually, mentally, physically, you don’t have time to fear because you are busy building yourself in a positive way. And don’t forget to include God in all your plans, you are going to need his wisdom and guidance. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths,” Proverbs 3:5-6.

Don’t Panic: No matter what you hear, don’t panic. When you trust in God, you do not have to panic. Depending on the relationship you have built with him, he may even warn you about things that are going to happen before it happens, giving you time to prepare. Preparation will allow you to not live in fear or panic, so take heed when others are telling you to prepare but remember you won’t be able to prepare for every single thing, so there is no point in panicking. In any case, don’t fall into the panic trap. For example, with the recent gas and toilet paper shortage, people were being very irrational because they panic. Here in America, we are very spoiled and people act very immature because they cannot get something, it’s not that serious. When things are happening and you happen to not have access to something, think of alternatives, some people have that one-way mentally. If they don’t have gas they can’t drive the car, but maybe you can walk, take a cab, or ride a bicycle. Always know there are alternatives, this will allow you to not even enter the panic trap. “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. Matthew 6:25-31.

Enjoy Your Life: People who live in fear, don’t realize no matter what was going on in the world, some people were still enjoying their life. Remember, when things are occurring in this life, it’s not happening to every single person, and sometimes it’s not even happening to you, but you choose to live in fear anyway, which is a waste of time. I encourage you to enjoy your life, go to the spa, go on a vacation, eat out in a nice restaurant, take a boat ride, go to the beach, or take a class you will enjoy, but keep on living your life. You don’t want to look back in life and realize you wasted it in worry and fear. Understand life will go on whether you participate or not, “ Here is what I have seen: It is good and fitting for one to eat and drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labor in which he toils under the sun all the days of his life which God gives him; for it is his heritage. As for every man to whom God has given riches and wealth, and given him power to eat of it, to receive his heritage and rejoice in his labor—this is the gift of God. For he will not dwell unduly on the days of his life, because God keeps him busy with the joy of his heart. Ecclesiastes 5:18-20.

Draw Closer to GOD: The reason I’m usually calm about things, is because of my relationship with God, if I didn’t know better I too would be living in fear and worry like others, but that is not God’s will for my life. I also do not want to live a life of fear, it’s not healthy. It’s my relationship with God that has sustained me throughout the years. I can laugh about many things because of my relationship with God. He has shown me, a lot of things people worry about it’s not that serious, and that’s not what life is about. So I encourage you to spiritually grow and draw closer to GOD, after all, it is he that made us and not we ourselves. “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world”. John 16:33.

May you embrace faith over fear. Have faith in God, that he will look after you no matter what. Draw closer to GOD.
