Preparing for the Aftermath

My prayers to anyone affected by any natural disasters. Once again, the weather and events in this world keep reminding us the importance of preparedness. Understand once a weather-related disaster takes place it may not be the end of your troubles. Do not take lightly any warning to your area, especially if you live in a hurricane prone state, a tornado state or even a flood zone area. You can’t outrun raising water, if you live in a flood zone it will always be best to find somewhere safer. These latest weather events have shown us how bad the infrastructure is. We all are basically living on eggshells that can crack anytime.

We should be thankful for all the access we have to use electricity every day, running water, food, get and go wherever and whenever without a thought. Most people would start to feel uncomfortable and complain if they were to lose power even for a few hours. That is why it’s important to stay prepare. Once the power goes out, your frustration level will rise the longer it’s off. Don’t rely on the main PowerSource but invest in a solar generator. If you have a gas generator that is great also but remember gas stations often shutdown during weather related events, or some even run out of gas. So, eventually you will need more gas but with a solar generator you don’t have to worry about running out of gas. Just make sure to keep them fully charged. Also, don’t think because you have a generator that you need to light up the entire house, that’s the fastest way to run out of gas/energy. Use your generator only for necessity.

Invest in emergency lights, the ones you can leave in the outlet and once power goes off, they automatically turn on. This is another great way to have lights in the house without breaking your budget for a generator or even in additional too. You can place them in different areas in your place.

If you haven’t, learned about canning. Canning your food will allow you to have access to something good to eat if the power is out too long and all your food gets spoiled. It’s a great method for food preservation for any event. Just make sure to keep them in a safe, cool place in your home. Many times, after a weather-related event, there is no meat in the supermarket because they have to get rid of all the spoiled meat and food, most stores don’t have backup generators. Canning will allow you to can some meat that you can eat afterwards. In addition, people who did not prepare are often running to the stores afterwards to grab what they can get, leaving you with nothing to buy. A store may also be closed as well.

Store water not just to drink but to use for other things such as cleaning, hygiene, just in case water is not accessible. Keep some bottle waters in the freezer that way if you do lose power, you will have something cold to drink. I know after a hurricane it tends to get super hot and water is a necessity. Always make sure to have some water stored somewhere.

If you end up losing power for a few days, you will eventually get bored, especially if you lose internet as well. This can actually be a good time to get some DIY projects done during the day when the sun is out and bright, or get to any task you have been procrastinating on. Play some games, read a book, write a book, help your fellow neighbors. Keep yourself and your mind busy otherwise you will just get frustrated every hour the power, and water is not back on.

After a disaster you don’t know how long it’s going to take to get back to “normal” that is why it will remain important to have a preparedness mindset. It’s true you won’t be able to prepare for every single little thing in life but you can make your life a little less miserable when times get tough by preparing. Another good thing about preparing is that when your household is okay you have more time to help others who may not be in a good position. You will have time to help your fellow neighbor to get their house in order, or maybe able to donate food, water, supplies, all because you took the time to prepare and have less to worry about.

I hope you have been encouraged to get prepping and stay prepared. Prepping may not address all of your problems, but you will have less things to worry about. Preparedness for bad events is not something new, we can look back in biblical events when God told Noah he will destroy the earth to build an ark to protect him and his family, Genesis 6-7. Joseph also reveals God’s dream and told Pharaoh to prepare for a seven-year famine, and so they stock up on food, Genesis 41. Preparedness goes hand in hand with being wise and understanding the times you live in. It’s good to be smart but wisdom will save your life. “For the protection of wisdom is like the protection of money, and the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the life of him who has it, “ Ecclesiastes 7:12 (ESV)
