We all can fall prey to being gullible. Someone who is gullible is someone who easily believes anything and everything being spoken, or shown to them. Someone gullible is easily deceived because they don’t exercise discernment concerning all matters. I also want to point out you can be gullible in all areas of life not just with spiritual matters. Why is it so dangerous? Well, first you are an easy target for deception and tricks. 1 Peter 5:8 tells us “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Now many people are looking out for Satan himself to appear but Satan is smarter than that, he operates through people who give him an open door to work against others. If you are someone who trust everyone, believe every story you hear, or believe everything you see on the surface, it is easy for Satan to bring certain people and things to you that are there just too used, distract, and deceive you. Never forget that Satan himself made himself appear as an angel of light! 2 Corinthians 11:14. That is a major deception! That means he can bring things to you, bring people to your life that appear they are God sent when really Satan was gaining ground into your life. Beloved test the spirit just as the scripture instructed us to do, 1 John 4:1.
Secondly, being gullible makes you lose your backbone and good judgment. It causes you to accept things that normally good judgment people would not accept. It also makes it difficult to stand on your beliefs, your standards, and God’s standards. Most gullible people are easily waved here and there. One person can come to them they believe that person story then another person comes to them and they turn around and believe that person’s story. They don’t have the ability to stand for anything for a length of time. James 1:8 tells is “He is a double-minded man, is unstable in all his ways. See a key word in that scripture? “ALL”, you’ll be unstable in ALL your ways. Therefore, no matter what area of your life, you will be unstable, can’t make sound decisions, don’t exercise good judgment, especially when you have a gullible spirit. A gullible spirit will make you deal with unnecessary drama and hurtful situations repeatedly because you always believe a person’s excuses for their ill behaviors towards you. You’re unable to separate forgiveness from boundaries. I’m all for forgiveness but not for silliness and people with lack of boundaries. Just because you are a forgiving person doesn’t mean you should tolerate constant ill behavior towards you. People don’t change by mere words, actions must follow. Matthew 7:20 tells us “by their fruits you will know them,” actions speaks louder than words. Believe it when someone shows you their true colors and nothing less.
Keys to Stop being Gullible
Use & Exercise the Spirit of Discernment: I understand not everyone is gifted with the spirit of discernment, but you can ask God to give you it, 1 Kings 3:9; James 1:5-6. Someone who is discerning doesn’t just look at things as they appear in the surface, they are often very observant, and not quick to react to things they hear and see on the surface, John 7:24; Matthew 10:16; Colossians 2:8; Philippians 1:9-10; Hebrews 5:14. When you have a discerning spirit, you will not be quick to jump into things you haven’t really looked into or investigated yourself. Discerning people don’t follow the crowd and what the crowd sees and believes they look into things themselves. Everyone has a story and then there is the truth, discerning people don’t choose one story over the other, but looks for the truth in the story. Having a discerning spirit also helps you separate someone’s true intentions vs. their mistakes, 1 Thessalonians 5:21-22; Ephesians 6:11. We all make mistakes, but some people intentional hurt others and call it a mistake, 2 Timothy 3:13; Ephesians 4:27. I know for me, the Holy Spirit is always revealing people true intentions to me, so I’m usually not surprise when they end up showing me their true colors.
Use & Exercise Wisdom: Wisdom is another spirit, God will provide if you lack, James 1:5-6. When you have wisdom, it will help you to not get involve with certain matters and people because wisdom will help you see there is a problem or will be a problem there. Now wisdom truly comes from God, it is not enough to have “street knowledge” or knowledge of this world, you need the wisdom that comes from above, James 3:17. Why the wisdom from above? Because God spirit searches all things and can better direct you on your next steps so you can make good/sound judgment, 1 Corinthians 2:9-10; Proverbs 15:3; Jeremiah 29:11; Jeremiah 17:9;. God knows the beginning to the end, who better to get advice from?
Stop Participating in Things that Don’t Grow You & Stop Compromising: As you can see you can’t really grow in any area of your life when you are gullible , you’ll always be here and there. You’ll start to compromise on everything because you don’t have the ability to think for yourself or rely on God to help you. Anyone and everything can pop up in your life and you believe, trust, receive, and can’t distinguish the truth from error or the false from truth. Being gullible distracts you from God fully operating in your life. Your inability to stand for your belief or on the word of God will continue to destroy you and keep you compromising following the wrong people and the wrong path. The need to participate in everything and believe everything you hear and see, will cause you to compromise, and push God away, Proverbs 25:28; James 4:17; Joshua’s 24:15; James 1:5; Matthew 6:24. I encourage you to look into your life and see areas you have let others determine your decisions and actions. Look into your life, and see where you have compromise that has work against God, your values, your belief and your judgment.
I hope this has been enlightened for you. May you be encouraged to stand strong for your values, beliefs and most importantly for God’s word. We don’t live in a world that embraces God matters, but remember there is separation of the sheep’s and the goats, so it’s important not to follow the crowd and end up on the wrong side. Also, keep in mind God will be calling a remnant not a crowd, Isaiah 28:5; Isaiah 10:22; Isaiah 11:11; Romans 11:1-36; Romans 9:27; Micah 2:12. We all will be held accountable for our own words and actions, Revelation 20:1-15. The shepherd doesn’t shepherd goats but the sheepfold, Matthew 25:32-33; John 10:27.
