What Goes Up Must Come Down: What We Can Learn From the Tower of Babel
“ Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. As people moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there. They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.” But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other. ”So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. That is why it was called Babel—because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth. Genesis 11:1-9
Two Keys We Can Learn
Do Not Underestimate The Power of God: Just like you read in the scripture, God let them build the tower as high as they can but he put a stop to it to let them know who is in charge. Similarly, just because you see that certain people are getting away with things doesn’t mean God is not going to deal with them. ”For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together,” Colossians 1:16-17. God is the Alpha and Omega never forget that.
Mankind Will Soon Learn They Have Limits: The world teaches us we have no limits, we can reach the sky, do whatever we want, clearly scripture shows us, you have a limit. Anyone who thinks they are wise will be made a fool. There are many who are “exploring” space and some with talks of the possibility of living there but always remember what goes up must come down. Some people think they will live forever, but everyone has a timestamp, your birth and death are in God’s hand and he already shortens man’s lifespan, “And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years,” Genesis 6:3. Only God has the power to change that, 2 Kings 20:1-6.
We must be careful as believers to not get carried away with the pride of life and the need to exalt ourselves. The people building the tower wanted to “make a name for themselves.” Humbleness can take you far in life and God will protect a humble person but he hates pride. The need to be like God or like a god is not new to humanity and many haven’t learned from Satan’s own failed takeover. May you be free to learn, explore with the heart of humbleness. Draw Closer to God.
