What To Do During a Disaster While On the Go

The disasters around the world and weather have been getting more and more unpredictable. One thing we can be sure of is that a disaster can happen anytime and anywhere. After seeing so much weather changes, I myself started thinking what would I do if something happened while I was on the go. Do you have a plan if it’s happening to you while you are on the go? Here’s some tips on how you can prepare:

  • Be ready to just leave. We are thankful for the pictures we see, but during a disaster it’s really not the time to be trying to do a video while a wave is coming at you. Get to safety first.  Always move away from the disaster not closer to it.
  • Figure out where you will take shelter. The common places often recommended to take shelter is in the bathroom or a closet. If you are on the road, your car may be your best option. Try to get as far away from the scene as you can.
  • Keep an emergency kit/bag in your car and/or carry one in your persons. It doesn’t have to be a big bag, you can buy travel size items and put in a small bag, like a makeup bag. Make sure to always carry water with you and some snacks.
  • Keep some cash and change on you, so if there is a blackout and you can’t used your card, you will have something to buy gas, snack, etc,
  • If you live in a winter state, make sure to have an extra blanket, hand & feet warmers in your car as well, just in case you are stuck there for a while.
  • Make sure you always have a full tank. That was the first thing my mom taught me when I got my driver license years ago, always make sure your car is full of gas. You never know when the power can go out or even a shortage. If you have to take a longer route to go home or to find safety, make sure every week that you have a full tank of gas in your car.
  • Keep a glass breaker in your car, if you have to break the windows to get out and make sure it is somewhere reachable and not in the trunk!
  • Make sure you phone is fully charge before you leave the house. You can also carry a solar cell phone charger. You want to be able to communicate with someone and do make sure to let someone know where you are and what is going on. You can invest in a small gasless generator, they are small and easy to carry on the go as well, you never know what you will get stuck in.
  • Examine the risk of disasters in your area, do you live in a flood zone, is your state a hurricane state? Or prone to tornados? Find out what you are surrounded by and plan accordingly.
  • Teach your children what to do during an emergency, as most children are away from home in school for a good part of the day. Do drilling exercise with them. Make an emergency kit for them with snacks and water.
  • If you often travel with children in the car, keep some entertainment in the car for them and yourself, a book to read, coloring books. They sell adult coloring books as well. The key is to keep your mind on something positive if you are somewhere you cannot leave, stuck, or waiting for help.
  • Learn alternative routes of how to get home. It’s important to know your area, know different routes and break your routine from your normal routine from time to time.
  • I am not fond of apps that has tracking, but an emergency and weather app that alerts you of what is near can be helpful to help you avoid certain things.
  • Search the web to figure out what may be going on in your area, especially if you find yourself stuck in traffic for a very long time, a crowd of people, a group of people going in a different direction. Since you are on the go, you may not know a tornado is close or what is happening. Look for any public announcements.
  • Try to be as alert as you can. I know there are many things that can get your distracted, but take some moments in the day and pause.
  • It’s okay to leave, walk away from anything or anyone you feel uncomfortable with. Our intuition can save us. How many said they were going to go in that supermarket that a shooting just occurred but something made them do something else. If a road you were going to take make you feel uneasy then don’t get on it. If a stranger is getting to close, prepare to protect yourself. Listen to your intuition.
  • If there is a shooting, stay down and low as much as you can. Sometimes running is not a good idea because bullets can fly everywhere.
  • Pray, yes pray before you leave the house. Pray during the disaster. Pray that God provides protection for your going ins and coming outs. That Angels will watch over you. Pray that he will guide you to safety and what you need to do.

These was some quick tips, you may be able to find more online and in depth. As always be safe, stay alert, stay praying and keep prepping. Want more? Here’s some of my simple tips on flood Understanding GOD’s Covenant

Scripture Meditation

“I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you—the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” Psalm 121 (NIV)

“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”  Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked. If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,” and you make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. You will tread on the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent. “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.” Psalm 91 (NIV)
