The Dangers of Pride

Pride can manifest differently in people, but most end up having the same characteristics, here are some things to look for and watch out for (not an exclusive list of characteristics) as you grow in the things of God. Remember Pride is still one of the sins God hates and as believers growing in the things of God, we must remove all the behaviors that can hinder our relationship with God.

(1) Pride often causes one to make decisions without God, feeling you can “handle” everything yourself.

(2) Prideful people often take credit for everything, even when others were involved in helping.

(3) Pride starts to make one act as if others are beneath you and begin treating those who are not in the same group or level harshly and/or speak ill of them.

(4) Pride causes you to trust in your own abilities, money, education, status, etc.

(5) Prideful people often want or seek out for attention or create something to get all the attention on them.

(6) A prideful person’s relationship with God is often based on receiving blessings and not instruction, correction, wisdom, or guidance.

(7) Times, when a prideful person prays, is usually to ask God for something for themselves or for God to rescue them out a situation but not for genuine communication.

(8) Pride causes one to ignore people who are trying to teach you, correct you, and help you, feeling you know better than they do.

(9) Prideful people often hide; conceal their sins from others to be seen as perfect.

(10) Pride causes one to be self-seeking, consume with yourself, your thoughts, looks, what you own, etc.

(11)Pride causes one to have a false humility, mostly pretending to be nice with people you feel can help you reach your goals.

(12) Pride often causes one to have a god-like complex, often narcissistic, you often want people to worship you, bow down to your every command. In a religious setting, the prideful person creates an atmosphere where people turn to them for guidance rather than the Holy Spirit.

There are more characteristics I can add, but I will keep this short. As believers, we must always check ourselves to make sure we are not doing or participating in a sin God hates. Although pride may seem harmless in your eyes, it’s spiritually dangerous. Your relationship with God cannot flourish if you are stuck in pride or supporting, participating with people who are prideful because of their pride God doesn’t exist in their mind. In their mind, they have made themselves a god and you don’t want to follow their path to destruction, “Do not be deceived, bad company corrupt good character, 1 Corinthians 15:33.

Scripture Meditations

“Do you see a man who is wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.” Proverbs 26:12

“For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.” Mark 7:21-23

“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.” 1 John 2:15-17

“For the wicked boasts of the desires of his soul, and the one greedy for gain curses and renounces the Most High. In the pride of his face the wicked does not seek him; all his thoughts are, “There is no God.” Psalm 10:3-4

“Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” Matthew 23:12

“Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips.” Proverbs 27:2

“But Hezekiah did not make return according to the benefit done to him, for his heart was proud. Therefore wrath came upon him and Judah and Jerusalem. But Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the Lord did not come upon them in the days of Hezekiah.” 2 Chronicles 32:25-26

“For the sin of their mouths, the words of their lips, let them be trapped in their pride. For the cursing and lies that they utter,” Psalm 59:12

“When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.” Proverbs 11:2

“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 16:18

“But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” James 4:6

“Everyone who is arrogant in heart is an abomination to the Lord; be assured, he will not go unpunished.” Proverbs 16:5

“The fear of the Lord is hatred of evil. Pride and arrogance and the way of evil and perverted speech I hate.” Proverbs 8:13
