Identifying the Idols in Your Life

The issue of Idolatry has always been around since biblical times; however, it has a new form these days. Today idols are more in the form of celebrities, politicians, materialistic things and even self. However, in whatever form it takes, it is not a welcome behavior in the life of a believer. The Most High tells us in Exodus 20:3-6,  Exodus 34:14; Deuteronomy 4:23-24, Deuteronomy 5:9,  Joshua 24:19, Psalm 78:58, He is a jealous God, not jealous of you but for you. He doesn’t take pleasure with us making other things, having other gods, making yourself a god, or people your god. In Jeremiah 1:5, God said “Before I formed thee in the belly, I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.” God didn’t adopt you from another god, He is the Alpha and Omega who created you, and He expects to be your God and to be loved by you. He doesn’t want true believers to have any other God before him, so you must understand there are dangers in Idolatry. Now do keep in mind I am referring to the God of Israel, the God of Abraham, Jacob, etc.

You must understand idolatry hinders our relationship with God because something or someone is between you and God. We must first identify what is Idolatry in God’s eyes in order to address it to remove it from our lives and move forward with God. The bible is filled with tons of scriptures telling us to not to worship any other gods, not to bow down to other gods and to get rid of our idols. The scripture goes further to telling us to not bring certain items like graven images in our home, Deuteronomy 7:25-26, so this is pretty serious. In addition, when the time of the antichrist comes, he will be forcing many to worship the beast, that is a Idolatry, Revelation 13. It is going to be imperative for you to identify any idolatry in your life now, so when prophecy unfold you won’t get caught in deception.

The dictionary defines Idolatry as “the worship of idols, extreme admiration, love, or reverence for something or someone.”

So the first thing here we need to address is seeing what idols you do have in your heart/life- what are you idolizing? It is your pastor, A person, politician, things, like a car? Someone else life?  Yourself? What has possession of your heart? What are you worshipping and bowing down to? A statute? Your spouse? Money?  Your Job? What or Whom is occupying your heart because God and your idol cannot live in the same space. God is asking you to make a choice, him, or your idol. How did you even get caught up with idolatry? Are you looking for something more than God? Do you feel someone else life is better than yours is so now you are idolizing them?  Or are you enjoying people worshipping you and idolizing you? You must be able to identify where it started before you can remove it because if you don’t get to the root of the problem, you are just going to replace one idol with another. Sit down and think, “Am I in any type of Idolatry and why, and how did I end up here.” That is one way of spiritual growing, is identifying what and who keeps you away from God or hinders your relationship with God. The Holy Spirit will help you identify who or what it is you are idolizing. Ask him to reveal this to you in prayer.

Once you identify what had you in Idolatry, ask God to forgive you for having an idol and for worshipping an Idol and turn away from idolatry. I encourage you to start drawing to God so things like idolatry won’t hinder your relationship with him. If you desire to spiritually grow and get more from God (spiritual gifts) then you have to learn to identify what displeases God and turn away from these things. I posted a video on this topic back on August, 2019-be sure to check it out.
