Finding Ways to Help Others

Hopefully, you are aware that May is Mental Health Month and you are taking care of your mental health every day. Today I want to help you identify ways that will help you stay mentally healthy while helping others. Often times when we are going through something we focus on “us” and “our need” but in reality, a quick way to get over yourself is to help others. When you find yourself depress, oppress or suppress, there is someone out there going through the same thing or worst. The best thing to do is not to turn all the focus on you, but find someone else to help and bless. There is a lot going on around the world, and many are suffering silently. While it’s important to take care of yourself, today I encourage you to find ways to help someone else. I guarantee you will feel better quicker than be sunken in your own problems. You don’t need millions of dollars, you may already have something in your possession, you can give or a skill someone else can use. We all have things we purchased and never used or wear. Those items are perfect for donating. Perhaps you have a skill that can help someone get to focus on their goals. So don’t wait until you have a truck full of money to help, there are many ways to help without spending any money at all.

Here are a few ways to helping others:

Random Act of Kindness: Random act of kindness can be paying for a person’s grocery’s bill, cutting a neighbors grass, for the winter states, shoveling a neighbor driveway, helping someone clean their home and get organized, give a surprise gift, wash their car, pick up their grocery. There are so many things I can list but do what your heart moves you to do that is kind.

Spend Quality Time with Someone with no distractions, especially cell phones. Many times people are speaking to you and they are scrolling their phone the entire time when you do that it shows you are not focusing on the person and you probably didn’t hear the majority of what was said. People want to be heard, take time to make someone feel they are being heard.

Let Someone Know You Care & You Are There For Them, a lot of time people feel lonely even when surrounded by a group of people. Reach out to someone and let them know you care. Let someone know you appreciate them and need them in your life. Sometimes it’s that one phone call that can prevent suicide, drug use, or a bad decision.

Donating: Food, Clothes, Shoes, Household Items, Supplies, etc. I usually look for several charities and shelters online and many will give you a list of items needed, so you’ll know exactly what to get. I also like to do care packages and randomly give them out to others. A care package is often filled with different supplies someone can use.

Money Donations: Leaving a nice tip, paying someone’s bill for a month, become a sponsor, open an investment account for a teenager and teach them to invest, etc.

Use your God Given Gift/Skills: Sing at a nursing home, show others how to sew, teach someone how to accomplish their goals, help someone create a resume, be their assistant for the day, help someone get physically fit, teach a child how to pronounce difficult words, Volunteer at an organization, do research for someone.

Take time to make someone else feel special doing this will help you feel special in turn keeping you mentally healthy. If you make this, a goal in your life and take action to do it you won’t have time to dwell on any negativity that you may have or experiencing in your life. Do something that will be good for your soul and mind.

Scripture Encouragement

“Therefore if there is any consolation in Messiah, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let, each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. Philippians 2:1-4

“ for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’“Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’ Matthew 25:35-40

“Blessed is he who considers the poor; The Lord will deliver him in time of trouble. The Lord will preserve him and keep him alive, And he will be blessed on the earth; You will not deliver him to the will of his enemies. The Lord will strengthen him on his bed of illness; You will sustain him on his sickbed.” Psalm 41:1-3

Therefore  Comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11

“And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him. Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled.Blessed are the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God.Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:1-10
