What We Can Learn From King Solomon & Our Prayer Life

“ Solomon loved Yahweh, walking in the statutes of David his father, only he sacrificed and made offerings at the high places. And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for that was the great high place. Solomon used to offer a thousand burnt offerings on that altar. At Gibeon Yahweh appeared to Solomon in a dream by night, and God said, “Ask what I shall give you.”And Solomon said, “You have shown great and steadfast love to your servant David my father, because he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart toward you. And you have kept for him this great and steadfast love and have given him a son to sit on his throne this day. And now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of David my father, although I am but a little child. I do not know how to go out or come in. And your servant is in the midst of your people whom you have chosen, a great people, too many to be numbered or counted for multitude. Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?” It pleased Yahweh that Solomon had asked this. And God said to him, “Because you have asked this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches or the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right, behold, I now do according to your word. Behold, I give you a wise and discerning mind, so that none like you has been before you and none like you shall arise after you.” 1 Kings 3:3-12

Another major area most people struggle with is obtaining answers to their prayers. Now depending on your situation, you may be still waiting for an answer from God. You may still be wondering why certain things had to happen and why to you. What I learn from King Solomon and in my prayer life is that it’s more important to seek and ask God for wisdom and understanding rather than an outright answer. Many times we are asking God to “fix it,” just fix it God. Although God has the power to “fix it” there will be times he will just guide you through “you” fixing it. So today I encourage you to take a page out of King Solomon’s book and whatever you are praying about ask God to give you the understanding, the guidance, the wisdom for what you need and I am pretty sure that God will answer that prayer!

What We Can Learn

King Solomon was genuine. Many people still think they can or are fooling God, but God knows the deepest part of our hearts. God saw that King Solomon had a good heart towards the situation. Are your prayers genuine?

King Solomon asked for understanding to handle the situation rather than asking God to fix the people. King Solomon could have easily asked God to make the people just be obedient to him but he made a wiser request. Have you considered how and what you are asking God to do?

King Solomon’s request was self-less, he was not seeking a solution for himself but rather others. It’s true the majority of our prayers are about our needs, have you consider those around you?

King Solomon was obedient to God and his word. God requires obedience, not just a relationship, because of his obedience God looked upon King Solomon favorable. Are you obedient to God and his word?

King Solomon desired to do what is right in the sight of God. Many times people don’t realize holding on to integrity and honesty goes a long way. Are you seeking to do what is right and not what’s easy?

“Turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding—indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of Yahweh and find the knowledge of God. For Yahweh gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He holds success in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones. Then you will understand what is right and just and fair—every good path. For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you,” Proverbs 2:2-11.
